Reasons to use drip edge. Drip edge also covers and protects sheathing edges from gutter splashback and ice dams along the eaves and gives rake edges a clean finished look. Drip edge overhangs the sides of the roof and has a small metal flange that is bent away from the fascia. Drip edges and rake edges are both metal sheets that are installed as part of the roofing system and as the edge in their name implies they are placed at the edges of the roof.

It is non corrosive and non staining so that your roof looks good but is structurally stable. Mark where the drip edge begins to overhang and one inch further out from that overhang. Drip edge diverts water away from roof edges so it won t be drawn by capillary action back up under shingles or sheathing. The primary difference between these two types of edges is where the edge is placed and the way the metal is angled in order to shed water away from the roof system.

Then cut out the topmost portion of the drip edge by your first mark. For proper water drainage the drip edge on the rakes should always overlap the drip edge on the eaves. This works out correctly if you do the eaves first.
