Roof framing is one of those carpenter skills that appears quite complicated and indeed some roof designs are difficult.

It is fastened directly to the rafter tails or to horizontal framing blocks called lookouts. The last pieces to go in were nailing blocks above the ledger for the back of the return and at the bottom edge of the soffit for attaching the rake 20. Most homes these days have boxed soffits but i find that a bit of creativity at the roof edge goes a long way toward style. Even if most people don t register what it is that makes a home seem special using a sloped soffit is an easy way to make a home look old or built with more craftsmanship than typical new homes.

At the gable edge use a gable or sidewall flashing. Span is the horizontal distance between the outside top plates or the base of two abutting right triangles. Before the roof sheathing goes on the open framing provides easy access for attaching the return blocking and the nailers for the rake soffit. This will keep weather out prevent lifting in high winds and provide a neat fin ished appearance.
