Lacking an expensive dial indicator or alignment tool i built a simple jig that uses my dial caliper to do the duty.

The dial indicator wound up at the bottom of our list but there are a lot of good reasons why it makes sense to be at the top of yours.

First i cut an 18 hardwood guide strip to fit the saw s miter slot so the bar stands about 1 8 proud of the saw table as shown above.
Leveling knobs adjust for any miter groove depth.
Just drop the pins in the miter slot adjust the arm so the dial indicator just kisses the saw blade and check it at the front and back of the blade.
Though simple to build this jig with a good dial indicator can help keep your saw operating smoothly and safely.

In the hardwood clamp block i cut a dado within a dado.
The first fits the dial caliper snugly to the bar while the second provides clearance for the depth bar to move unrestricted.

On a table saw it will allow you to test table saw alignment arbor shaft run out saw blade run out rip fence alignment and fence straightness.
Insert the jig in the left miter slot close to the front edge of the table move the rip fence over until it compresses the indicator s plunger about half way and lock the fence down.
Dial indicators typically measure in increments of 001 with 1 or 2 inches of plunger travel.

Each revolution of the pointer marks 100 so a separate smaller pointer is usually set into the dial s face to count the revolutions.
